This is a review and detailed measurements of the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Audio Interface (DAC/ADC). I was talked into buying it recently. The 2i2 costs US $140 including free Prime shipping so very reasonable for amount of functionality. For a budge device, the Scarlett 2i2 looks pretty good:
This makes it so there won't be clipping problems with hot/active pickups. The 1st gen 2i2 and Solo models had problems with that since they lack a PAD button (that's why I ended up with a 2i4). I tested the 2nd gen 2i2 using a guitar with Seymour Duncan Blackouts and it indeed works well without clipping.
The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is a 2 input, 2 output XLR amp that plugs into via USB to a computer. I upgraded to using it about 4 months ago and I'm glad I did. If you're using an XLR microphone or instrument to record onto a computer, this is a perfect entry level pro amp to start with.
Final verdict on the Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen 5.0. The Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen offers a huge upgrade in performance, versatility, and workflow over its predecessor. The dynamic range is higher, gain range is wider, and new features such as Auto Gain and Clip Safe make it an incredibly powerful recording tool.
Rugged and well built CONS 'Air Mode' is a little gimmicky 8.5 OUR SCORE Focusrite unveils their brand-new 3rd gen Scarlett audio interfaces. We go over the new features and review each of the units. Is it worth upgrading from 2nd gen to 3rd gen Scarlett? Find out below. Check out our recent review of the Scarlett 4th Generation here.
As it comes to sound, the 1st gen Scarlett 2i2 was limited to a sample rate of 96kHz. However, the 2nd gen 2i2 now supports up to 192khz sample rates with a 24-bit resolution (but, who records at 192khz anyway?).
Scarlett 2i2 1 st gen also works pretty well when compared to Scarlett 2i2 2 nd gen. The main differences are in the physical features and some of the hardware upgrades Focusrite has done to the 2 nd gen. (plus all the software tools added when you get the new 2 nd gen 2i2).
Features The 4th Gen offers many improvements and upgrades from the 3rd Generation. Here they are, at a glance: 120dB dynamic range Auto-Gain function Remote-controlled preamps Custom-designed headphone amp Refreshed easy start tool New 'Clip Safe' function
PROS: • Easy to use. • Excellent sound quality. • Friendly interface. CONS: • No pad on the mic preamp input. • App settings can't be saved. Originally introduced in 2011, the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 has undergone several revisions, first in 2016 (2nd Gen), then in 2019 (3rd Gen) and now a revision to 4th Gen.
